January, 2009

What an exciting year 2008 turned out to be. On a personal level, not only did we get to attend a Royal Garden Party at Holyrood House, but a couple of weeks later we had our own garden party at Kilmichael, at which we celebrated our Civil Union together with friends, family and staff members both past and present.

Excitement of a different order was provided in later in the year when a sudden flash flood on the hillside caused a culvert to block and then overflow, creating a spectacular, if fortunately, temporary water feature in the flower garden.

We both became Great Uncles once again with the birth of Niamh, and Helen, our Duty Manager, became grandmother to James Anthony. Just in case that made us feel a little old, we acquired a new Dalmatian, Giuseppe, from the Dalmatian Rescue society, whose irrepressible energy seems set to keep us all feeling young.

Other additions included Saxony ducks, Crollwitzer turkeys and several new breeds of chickens in Chickenopolis, thus guaranteeing that the supply of wonderful fresh eggs continues into 2009.

And, towards the end of the year, proof, if proof were needed, that Kilmichael is undisputedly ‘the best’. First we heard from the AA that, for the twelfth year in a row, we were once again to be awarded ‘red stars’, which means that we are again an ‘Inspectors’ Choice’ hotel, having featured consistently in their Premier Collection and Top Two Hundred Hotels lists.

Not only that, but we were also informed by The Scottish Tourist Board that we are one of the first recipients of their gold star awards, making us one of only twenty or so hotels to receive such an award. Visitscotland says that these awards reflect an exceptional standard of hospitality, service and cuisine well above expectations for hotels of our grading.

Well, despite the current economic gloom we hope that 2009 will turn out to be as happy and successful, both for Kilmichael, and also for the wonderful people who choose to stay with us and the very special people who help us maintain such high standards.

Happy New Year!
